3 Player Game – “Ghost Card” rules
Ghost Card is a unique 3 player version of Noble Treachery™. You must understand the basic 4 player rules before attempting the Ghost Card variant. Ghost Card is played exactly the same as a 4 player game with the following exceptions:
- There are only 3 players.
- Each player starts the game with only 1 Alliance Token (instead of 2).
- During game set-up, deal 7 cards to each of the 3 players and then place 7 cards face-down in a stack referred to as the Ghost Card Stack.
- The Ghost Card Stack is a stack of cards that a player may draw from to play a card if he or she does not want to play a card from his or her respective hand. The top card of the Ghost Card Stack is referred to as the Ghost Card.
- Each round, after the bet phase is complete but before the first card of the round is played, the Ghost Card (top card) is revealed and placed face-up on top of the Ghost Card Stack. It is important to note that at the beginning of each round, the Ghost Card is face-down. The Ghost card is not revealed until AFTER all players have bet and the challenger has rolled a die, declared war or diplomacy and has also declared which player will play the first card of the round.
- Each player, before playing his or her card may discard a card from his or her hand (face-down – do not reveal the discard) and place the card at the bottom of the Ghost Card Stack. When this is performed, the player then takes the Ghost Card and must immediately play the Ghost Card as if he or she had played the card from his or her hand. At the same time, the next card in the Ghost Card Stack is revealed and becomes the new Ghost Card.
- At the end of the round, the current face-up Ghost card is discarded along with each of the player’s played cards (do not turn up the next Ghost Card at this time). This occurs even if the Ghost Card was just revealed and no players had a chance to choose it. It is important to note that at the end of each round the Ghost Card Stack will have exactly the same number of cards as each player has in his or her hand.
- When the dealer deals a new card, he or she must deal a new card face-down on top of the Ghost Card Stack.
Play continues normally as a 4 player game would proceed. If played correctly, the Ghost Card Stack should always have the same number of cards as each player has in his or her hand (at the end of each round). The Ghost Card Stack will run out of cards at exactly the same time as the players.
- If a player is forced to play a card from his or her hand by an opponent, the player cannot choose to play the Ghost Card.
- If there is only one Ghost Card remaining, the player that chooses to play the Ghost Card, discards and the discard is immediately turned face-up and becomes the new Ghost Card.
- The Ghost Card Stack is not a pseudo 4th player. It cannot possess any alliance tokens.
